The Story of Calafia
Atop a beatiful Baja hill overlooking the spectacular Pacific Ocean, Calafia Hills is a brillant mosaic of contemporary architecture and rich cultural heritage that provides a unique connection to an amazing legend of extravagant treasures and exotic women.
Calafia Hills is inspired by the Amazon warrior queen, Calafia, who was belived to reign over a terrestrial island paradise of gold and riches - and populated solely by females. First popularized in the carly 16th century knightly romance novel, Las Sergas de Esplandiam (The Exploits of Esplandian) that received wide circulation in Spain in 1510, the beautiful and brave Queen Calafia ruled a kingdom of affluence and diversity named California.
To some extent this book, written by Garcia Ordonez Rodriguez de Montalvo, precipitated the Spanish hunt for gold in the New World. And, 30 years later, when the explorer and conquistator Hernan Cortes landed in what is now Baja California, he told his men they had arrived in Calafia's land.
But the mighty queen is not Calafia Hill's onle conecction to the region's extensive history. This magical development's landmark location near the Camino Real Misionero de las Californias (essentially a footpath connecting all the Spanish missions from the peninsula to the north) and its proximity to the geographic dividing line between colonial Alta California and Baja California - separating the Franciscan missions in the north from the Dominican missions in the south - provides a direct connection to the arrival of the sword and the cross to the New World.
With its wealth of natural resources and gorgeous stones, Queen Calafia's world was one of strength and beauty - and one of abundance. Today, the spirit of the island queen continues at Calafia Hills, with its sweeping ocean views, magnificent sunsets, and historic geography. And like the namesake queen, it too is destined to be legendary.
